Advanced General Surgery

Laparotomy

Laparotomy is a surgery that helps explore the abdominal organs and diagnose any problem.

Laparotomy

Laparotomy or surgical exploration is a procedure whose purpose is to analyze the abdominal organs, such as the appendix, intestines, kidneys, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, bladder, uterus, etc.

The procedure is under general anesthesia. The General Surgeon can cut in a part of the abdomen and analyze the abdominal organs. The method can be exploratory or have some surgical procedure.

Before Laparotomy

The General Surgeon will review your medical history, ask questions related to your symptoms, lifestyle, medical history, and if you are taking any medications.

You may undergo various tests so that the General Surgeon can make sure that you can undergo the Laparotomy under anesthesia.

Before the Laparotomy, these are some precautions that need to be followed:

Food and medicine

In preparation for laparoscopic surgery, your surgeon may ask you to do the following:

  • Do not eat anything the night before surgery. You can have a sip of water with your medications, but avoid eating and drinking for at least four hours before surgery.

  • Discontinue certain medications and supplements. It is important that you tell your doctor about the medications you are taking, since if there are any that interfere with the surgery, the doctor will ask you not to take them before the surgery.

Clothing and personal items

In case you need to spend a night or two in the hospital, you can prepare yourself with a small suitcase with personal items such as a toothbrush, comfortable clothes or a book to pass the time while you recover.

During Laparotomy

The General Surgeon will apply general anesthesia; the patient will not feel pain. He will make an opening in the abdomen, which will allow him to see the organs' state. If the General Surgeon observes an abnormality, he or she may remove a sample of the tissue (biopsy) to be analyzed in the laboratory. To finish, the General Surgeon will close the opening with stitches or staples.

After Laparotomy

After the Laparotomy, you will be taken to the recovery room where you can stay for a few days in the hospital. The doctor will be able to control, review your symptoms, and rule out any possible infection, such as respiratory problems, blood clots, etc. The General Surgeon must control any possible disease that could cause a cardiovascular accident, stroke, or heart attack.

¿Am I a candidate for this procedure?

Surgeons generally recommend the Laparotomy procedure to diagnose diseases that have not been detected by imaging tests.

The following are some of the diseases that can be detected by Laparotomy.

Make your appointment with the General Surgeon if you present any of the diseases mentioned above, or you detect another abnormal symptom.

When consulting your General Surgeon, please keep a record of your pain with a detailed description of the symptoms, duration, and what you think triggered them. Also, mention any medications you are taking.
