Kyphoplasty

Kyphoplasty, also known as Balloon Kyphoplasty, is used to treat painful vertebral crushing in the spine. In a vertebral crush, all or part of a bone in the spine collapses.
General or local anesthesia is usually applied, preventing you from feeling pain during the intervention. In general anesthesia, you will remain asleep, while in local, you will be awake. You will likely be given medicine to help you relax.
Osteoporosis (thinning of the bones) is the most common cause of the spine's vertebral collapse.

Before the Kyphoplasty procedure
The Neurosurgeon will review your medical history and ask questions about your symptoms, lifestyle, medical history, and if you are taking any medications. Please notify the doctor if you are pregnant or drinking heavily, more than 1 or 2 drinks per day.
Neurosurgeon may perform various tests to ensure that you can undergo a Kyphoplasty.
Follow all the instructions of your doctor, you must fast before the Kyphoplasty, do not eat or drink for 8 hours before the procedure.

During the Kyphoplasty procedure
Kyphoplasty is a surgical procedure that is performed in the OR at the hospital.
The Neurosurgeon will apply local anesthesia (you will stay awake and not feel pain) so that the patient does not feel pain. You will likely be given medicine to help you relax.
If necessary, general anesthesia will be applied (you will remain asleep and will not feel pain).

  • The Neurosurgeon will ask you to lie on your stomach, clean the back area, and put medication numb

  • A needle is inserted through the skin to the vertebra

  • Through x-rays using a C Arm, the Neurosurgeon will be able to observe in real-time until reaching the correct area in the lumbar region

  • With the needle into the bone, a balloon is placed and inflated. This allows for restoring the height of the vertebrae

  • To finish, the doctor will inject cement into space, making sure that it does not collapse again

After the Kyphoplasty procedure
After the Kyphoplasty, you will be taken to a recovery room where you can stay for a few hours.
The Neurosurgeon will discharge you, and you can return home the same day. You will be able to walk; however, it is recommended that you remain on bed rest for the minor for 24 hours, except to go to the bathroom.
After 24 hours, you can return to your daily activities. Don't do strenuous activities or carry heavy objects.
In case of pain, apply ice to the wound area.
By following your Doctor's instructions, you may have a speedy recovery.

¿Why do I need a Kyphoplasty?
The Neurosurgeon generally recommends this procedure to treat painful spinal crushing of the spine due to cancer, multiple myeloma, or having sustained a spinal fracture injury.

When consulting your doctor, try to keep a record of your pain with a detailed description of the symptoms, their duration and what you think triggered them. Also mention any medications you are taking.
